Tersely, but her voice shaking, Vivian said, “Don't say a word, Roman. I'm going to bed.”

On the second floor inside Vivian's apartment, Roman’s big hand dropped from her elbow before he simply vanished.

Now, she stood alone in the middle of her dark kitchen.

Roman hadn’t walked her up the stairs – she hadn’t opened the front door nor used her key to enter her house.

In fact, she’d hadn’t stepped foot outside that big cave.

Roman had simply cupped her elbow, cradling it firmly, and wha-lah! Here she was at home and Roman was gone.

Again, Vivian's stomach roiled and bucked painfully – the same way it had when Ram grabbed her and she'd landed inside Roman's sacred cave.

Denial roared to life – Vivian's mind refused any more input.

Unsettled and unsure, Vivian was glad Roman was gone, but she also wasn’t. It would have been nice to be held, soothed by him, but he’d poofed on her. What had Shoreman called it? Ghosting… Vivian shied away from taking that thought any further, her world already too topsy-turvy with unbelievable strange stuff.

Wobbly and truly low on energy, Vivian shakily made it to her bedroom, closing and locking the door as if that would keep Dracula Supernatural Man out.

Viv stripped naked, threw her wet clothes in the bathtub and crawled into bed, the duvet closing in around her as she snuggled into her pillow. Her hair was wet, but Viv didn’t care it would be a rat nest when she woke.

Foolishly and feverishly, Vivian Monaco hoped to wake up in the morning and all would be normal.

And…goldfish had feet.
